FM March 16: Feminist Frequency, WAM! the media & Mujeres de Maiz

Hosted by Lynn Harris BallenCelina Alvarez and Alicia Fry.

Anita Sarkeesian – founder of the fabulous blog Feminist Frequency – talks cultural criticism & her web series of video commentaries that take a new look at gender politics in popular culture. We’ll hear clips from her vids & her take on Toy Ads & Gender, Kanye West’s Monster Misogyny & more.

And Melanie Klein tells us all about the upcoming WAM! Women And Media LA conference. Part of WAM! It Yourself 2011, a multi-city event with events happening in LA and all over the world, …WAM! connects and supports media makers, activists, academics and funders working to advance women’s media participation, ownership and representation – part of a national advocacy movement for gender justice in media.

Then Xicana artist, activist and community organizer, Felicia Montes joins us to share tales of the journey that Mujeres de Maiz have been on since they came together in 1997. Like the many colors of Corn, Mujeres de Maiz is a diverse group of women bringing together the forgotten voices of women of color. They create visual and performing arts in local communities and cultural events/conferences, and we’ll hear about their calendar of events in honor of Womens History Month, and their future plans.
Plus a commentary on reality tv – a feminist take on TLC’s polygamous family show ‘Sister Wives’.
