Meet Lynn
Native of: Brakpan, South Africa. No you won’t find it on the map & yes that’s where that “funny” accent comes from. I’ve lived in South Africa, Mexico, and California, with family roots in England.
Words to live by: “Only connect! Live in fragments no longer” (E.M. Forster)
Things I cannot function without: Two cups of colombia supremo dark roast coffee every morning
Lives with: My partner of 20 years, Jeanne. And two cats and four short dogs!
Can’t live without: Books are my addiction. I gobble up books too quickly sometimes. (was the fastest reader on a speed test in 4th grade!)
I’m a WaterBaby: I was on the swimteam until junior high. Still hope I will learn to surf before I’m fifty, and was a dedicated boogie-boarder when I lived near to the ocean.
Signature accessory: All kinds of dangly earrings (and I wear a lot of green)
First Feminist consciousness: When I was about twelve, I discovered Fair Lady (a magazine in South Africa) was printing (between knitting patterns & baking tips) stories about the amazing ’70s women’s movement happening in the far-away USA.
Always in my fridge: Hummus, olives and sundried tomato tapenade - so I always have a snack, or something for friends, or even lunch.
Don’t call me: A girl, a lady, a chick or ma’am!
Superstitions: My mother taught me all her superstitions - I still can’t bring myself to put a hat on a bed, shoes on a table, or spill salt without throwing some over my left shoulder!
Secret talents: Play flamenco castanets & can still do a tap time-step
Passionate about: Global feminism and international rights for woman and girls. I started a scholarship fund for girls, while living in Mexico, and have seen first hand what a difference education and opportunities can make for girls and by extension their families and communities.
