I’ve gone back to school and formed an org called JAGed (Justice and Gender Education) at CSU Long Beach. Our group not only started the group, but now have a monthly printed Zine and online Blog, we’re on social media and have our own radio show on KBeach.org. To support Women Made Media is really important, so we can support each other in pursuing our dreams, careers and stop the War Against Women. I want to thank Ashley Judd for her continued support of women and media. I listen to Feminist Magazine on KPFK and they are changing how people think about women and talk radio.

This sounds like an impressive lineup. However, I’m disappointed in the way you describe the women. By failing to specify the race/ethnicity of Alix & Betsy, as you do the others, you perpetuate the racism inherent in the assumption that “white” is the standard that doesn’t require description or specificity.

Thank you so much for this program! I’ve been reliant on public transport for most of my life, and those who use cars really don’t have any idea what it’s like. For me, the worst part has been being exposed to intense sexual harassment. Thankfully, groups fighting street harassment are starting to pop up.

Hi Frida - thanks for your comments! Yes, one of our guests did talk about South Central Farm, and we had hoped to get HomeGirl cafe on the show but got no response to our emails/calls. (They’ve both been guests on FemMag before.) It’s a great idea to do follow up interviews with these guests talking about what’s happening locally. And we also want to do a follow up interview with Lideres de Campesinas (who were featured in Farmer Jane book) to hear more about their organizing with farm working women. Thanks for listening & keep sending feedback, we love it!

Good on you for doing women and food, but why aren’t you talking to the women of the South Central Farm? They’re still farming, bringing food to farmers’ markets and the community, and teaching cooking. They put L.A. on the the food map. You can’t really talk about women and food and Los Angeles without the Farmers.

“I moved to Los Angeles in August 2010 in complete and utter fear that I would lose the feminist community I had created in New York City. Some people find support and understanding through their families and friends – I find it within the feminist community.
And so, upon landing I did what any social media savvy, 20-something feminist would do and Googled: Feminist Los Angeles, Feminism LA, Los Angeles Women’s group and the likes, only to find Feminist Magazine.

For those of you who don’t know, Feminist Magazine is a remarkable radio show on KPFK that continuously manages to have relevant news relating to the feminist and activist community around the word (Myra, Miranda and I recently had the pleasure of speaking on the show this past Wednesday. THANK YOU MUCH for inviting me to speak on your show…Luckily, Sarah Shealy, the Director of the Accelerated BSN Program at Mount St Mary’s College, was listening to the show… She would like to brainstorm to find solutions facing our youth. As she stated, “I am curious about possibilities to blend educational experiences for my students with the needs of young women in the community.”

I am looking forward to developing an educational program for homeless teen girls and young women.

Thank you again to Melissa and KPFK for providing a platform that helps bring awareness to issues that more than often are quickly forgotten in mainstream media.
