FM July 14: Detained in COVID/Election Protection/ Love With Accountability

THIS WEEK on Feminist Magazine with host Lynn Harris Ballen ::
FIRST … Are we paying enough attention to the situation of incarcerated and detained women and the CoronaVirus? Among 2.3 million people in prisons, jails and immigration detention facilities are 40 thousand ICE detainees. And in the current pandemic, incarcerated people are among the highest risk group. Margo Okazawa-Rey of KPFA Womens Magazine talks to Ana Alicia Huerta, Staff Attorney for Removal Defense Project of the United Farm Workers Foundation, and Leticia Hernandez, whose mother is detained at Mesa Verde detention center near Bakersfield.
THEN … Since the gutting of the Voting Rights Act by the Supreme Court, there have been problems with voter purging, voter ID laws, modern-day ‘poll taxes’, precinct closures, and difficulties with voting machines. Women Rising Radio joins two election protection activists – Jennifer Cohn: attorney, journalist and election integrity advocate, associated with National Voting Rights Task Force, and Andrea Miller: IT specialist and founder of Center for Common Ground/Reclaim Our Vote and People Demanding Action.
PLUS … Cherise Charleswell talks to Aishah Shahidah Simmons about her project “Love With Accountability: Digging up the roots of Child Sexual Abuse.”  Aishah is an award-winning Black feminist lesbian independent documentary filmmaker, published writer, international lecturer, professor, activist; and incest & adult rape survivor. For over two decades her work has examined the intersections of race, gender, sexuality, and sexual violence. This new anthology invites diasporic Black people to join her in transformative storytelling that envisions a world that ends child sexual abuse, without relying on the criminal justice system.
