Coming up this week on Feminist Magazine with hosts Felicia Montes and Karina Elias : FIRST… Valecia Phillips talks with Bessie & Doris Duke award-winning choreographer Camille A. Brown, about her new work Black Girl: A Linguistic Play – which reveals the complexity of carving out a self-defined identity as a Black female in urban American culture. The performance is coming up at REDCAT in Los Angeles from December 3rd-6th.
In a society where black women are often only portrayed in terms of their strength, resiliency, or trauma, this work privileges the black girl gaze—interrogating these narratives by representing a nuanced spectrum of black womanhood in a racially and politically charged world.
THEN … we speak with Kimberly Bautista of the Justice for My Sister Collective, live from Honduras, who will speak to femicide around the world and in Los Angeles. We’ll discuss the recent murders of two young women, Gabriela Calzada and Briana Gallegos in Montecito Heights, and hear about the organizing and issues being raised by women activists and community across the area. She’ll also tell us about the public broadcast screenings of her documentary film, Justice for My Sister for domestic violence awareness month / International Day to Eliminate Violence Against Women.
PLUS … we hear from Premstar Santana and Frances Divine about the upcoming Moonfaze Feminist Film Festival. We discuss the founding of this first annual Moonfaze festival, the films, and the fun events – all happening December 5th, in Los Angeles. And you’ll find out where you can get your tickets, and all the info about the event.
Hear about all this and more On Tuesday at 3 – THIS is what Feminism Sounds Like!
