THIS WEEK on FemMag with host Lynn Harris Ballen :: Last month, a few days after the ICE kidnappings began in Los Angeles, rightwing media including Fox News and the NY Post reported that “ Leftwing nonprofit groups are openly helping to fuel anti-ICE riots in LA”. Among the groups they attacked for sharing PPE kits was Operation Healthy Hearts (OHH) – which is in fact a grassroots mutual aid organization based in Hacienda Heights.
We talk to Operation Healthy Hearts founder Jackie Villalta about the work OHH actually does in the San Gabriel Valley area. How OHH started – serving breakfasts to unhoused neighbors – and grew into a mutual aid hub that builds community trust and connects people to resources. How their approach differs from traditional foodbanks – offering nutritionally dense and culturally competent foods.
