THIS WEEK on Feminist Magazine with host Lynn Harris Ballen : Some of Us Are Brave: A Black Women’s Radio Program aired on KPFK 90.7 FM from 2003 until 2011. The program covered a myriad of issues by amplifying the voices of a broad cross-section of Black women.
And now some of those voices have been preserved by journalist, author & KPFK host Thandisizwe Chimurenga, who put together a collection of these interviews in the recent two volume series “Some of Us Are Brave: Interviews and Conversations With Sistas in Life and Struggle” Including interviews with visionaries and radical changemakers like Assata Shakur, Barbara Ramsy, Carol Boyce-Davies, Euzhan Palcy, Michelle Alexander, Evelyn White, Paula Giddings, Pearl Cleage, Ramona Africa and Sisters on the Run.
Thandi talks to Women’s Magazine hosts Margo Okazawa-Rey and Jovelyn Richards about the books and how they capture various moments in time with a variety of women, as well as how they take the intellectual production of and about Black women out of the hands of institutions that are both fundamentally anti-Black and anti-woman.
