THIS WEEK on Feminist Magazine with host Lynn Harris Ballen : FIRST … The AIDS Coalition To Unleash Power Los Angeles (ACT UP/LA) was active from 1987 to 1997, bringing AIDS activism to the Southern California area.
And now original members have launched an ACT UP LA Oral History Project to preserve that history in the voices of activists from that time. We talk to two of the organizers – Judy Sisneros and Helene Schpak – about ACT UP LA history as a non-violent direct-action group that gathered at Plummer Park in West Hollywood during the presidency of Ronald Reagan, whose administration blatantly refused to acknowledge the growing AIDS crisis. And we hear about how the LA chapter stood out in its intense focus not only on creating a dedicated public AIDS ward in L.A County, but also its unique protests and exceptional focus on women’s and prisoner’s lives.
AND … What a dream – a rock summer camp for girls and trans and gender expansive youth! And this camp Chicxs Rockerxs South East Los Angeles – amplifies the voices of youth and artists from communities of color right here in LA. We hear about about how they create a space through music, mentorship and social justice to empower themselves and their communities. And they’ve got a very cool upcoming Swapmeet N Greet fundraiser on March 25th, and we hear all about it from one of the current organizers – Dorian Romero!
