THIS WEEK – on Feminist Magazine with host Lynn Harris Ballen : FIRST … We know that achieving reproductive justice is more than just about securing the right to an abortion – it’s not a single-issue struggle. Anti-abortion legislation is not pro-life, but it’s definitely pro-white supremacy. We talk to Jade Magnus Ogunnaike, interim vice president at Color of Change, about their work to pressure media companies and corporations to start deplatforming anti-abortion groups, stop collecting private data and stop funding anti-abortion politicians – so we can move closer to a world where Black people have the freedom and safety to make decisions about their health and bodily autonomy, without fear of surveillance or punishment.
AND … In the mid 1990s, the Reproductive Justice movement was formed by Black and indigenous women as a response to the limitations of the “reproductive rights” movement. Amy Gastelum of Making Contact Radio talks to Dr. Alexis Pauline Gumbs, scholar and writer, about her book “Revolutionary Mothering: Love on the Frontlines“, her experience being a teenager during the formation of the Reproductive Justice Movement and what she’s reading now to inform this moment.
THEN … Tis the season for Pumpkin Spice everything. But why is it so easy to hate on Pumpkin Spice lattes and the people who drink them? Soleil Ho of Popaganda asks guests how this assortment of spices from the Indian subcontinent become the hallmark of basicness, and what can its autumnal popularity tell us about capitalism, misogyny, and the need to belong?
