THIS WEEK on Feminist Magazine with host Lynn Harris Ballen ::
FIRST … Feminist Frequency fights abuse and challenges sexism in online Gaming. They began in 2009, when founder Anita Sarkeesian started making videos examining pop culture from a feminist perspective – analyzing how media – games, movies and tv shows – kept repeating negative tropes about gender, race, and sexuality. That focus on online representation and justice led to their current programs: the Games and Online Harassment Hotline – a free, text message-based, confidential emotional support hotline. And the upcoming Culture Shift Project – to bring change to games industry workplaces. And we’re joined by Programs Manager Jae Lin to hear all about it.
AND … The recent crisis at Red Hill has brought national attention to the urgent need to protect freshwater supply in Oahu, in the highly militarized US colonial state of Hawai’i. Less well-known is how common this issue is for those “living along the fenceline” of U.S. bases. #LoveLetterstoWater – a public awareness campaign – ran from March 8 (International Women’s Day) to March 22 (World Water Day). From KPFA Women’s Magazine, we feature the voices of women water protectors telling the stories of military water contamination in their home places, and their calls to action for campaigns to protect the water in Okinawa, Guåhan (Guam), Korea, the Philippines, Hawaiʻi, and other sites where fresh water is at risk.
