THIS WEEK on Feminist Magazine with host Lynn Harris Ballen :
FIRST … Defend Yourself works to empower people to end violence and create a world where they can be fully themselves. Students learn skills to help them prevent, heal from, and end violence and abuse. Defend Yourself’s experienced instructors know self-defense theory and techniques, and students leave better equipped to deal with everything from workplace harassment, to full-on attacks and bystander skills. Cherise Charleswell talks to Lauren Taylor (she/they), Founder and Director of Defend Yourself, and trainer Samia Lalani (they/he) – to learn more about this accessible self defense training for women and LGBTQ+ people. We hear about their courses on “Empowerment and Self-Defense for BIPOC” and their online classes – available everywhere.
AND … for Women’s History Month, we bring you a ‘Women Challenge Capitalism‘ special. Women are challenging male-dominated power structures, and creating alternatives to the profit-driven economic model of capitalism. Women Rising Radio features Jinwar, a women-led village in Northern Syria. And we meet worker-owners of Up & Go, a cleaning cooperative in New York city. To place this global movement in historical perspective, we also hear from feminist scholar Silvia Federici. Her books chronicle centuries of persecution against women, including how witch hunts are still carried out by capitalist nation-states to steal womens lands, knowledge and practices.
