THIS WEEK on Feminist Magazine with host Lynn Harris Ballen : Two doc films for Women’s History Month!
FIRST … As the frontwoman of X-Ray Spex, Poly Styrene was the first woman of color in the UK to front a successful rock band and was also a key inspiration for the riot grrrl and Afropunk movements. The death of the punk icon sent her daughter Celeste Bell on a journey across the world and through her mother’s archives – to reconcile their fraught relationship in a new documentary feature Poly Styrene: I Am A Cliché. Writer and musician Solvej Schou joins us as a guest host in conversation with Celeste, to hear all about her journey to make the film.
THEN … Voices from the documentary SHE’S BEAUTIFUL WHEN SHE’S ANGRY – a reflection on the rise of the women’s liberation movement in the United States, which explores the emergence of political thought that challenged systems of patriarchy. SHE’S BEAUTIFUL doesn’t romanticize the early movement, but dramatizes it in its exhilarating, quarrelsome, sometimes heart-wrenching glory. The film also doesn’t shy away from the controversies over race, sexual preference and leadership that arose in the women’s movement, and captures the spirit of the time.
That story still resonates today for women facing new challenges around reproductive rights and sexual violence, showing present-day activists creating their generation’s own version of feminism.
