THIS WEEK on Feminist Magazine with host Lynn Harris Ballen :: FIRST … Patients at abortion clinics all around the country have to deal with protestors, even in states where abortion rights are protected. In this often untold part of the Abortion Accessibility story, patients have to deal with so-called counselors trying to shame or dissuade them from going through with the procedure and prevent them getting the care they need. That’s where clinic escorts come in – a network of caring volunteers who show up every week to accompany people seeking reproductive care on the walk from their transportation to the clinic. We hear all about it from Feminist professor and clinic escort Chelsea Del Rio.
AND … The world is struggling to contain COVID-19, and not only could widespread vaccination campaigns help slow the emergence of new variants, they would save countless lives. So why can’t countries in the global south access the novel COVID-19 vaccines? Salima Hamirani from Making Contact takes a deep dive into the WTO and international patents, and health justice activists talk about the similarity between the current battle and the fight for access to antiretrovirals during the HIV pandemic. And we hear about creative campus activism, and what needs to change in order to create a more just medical system – not just in the United States, but around the world.
