FM Dec 15: SciFi Screenwriters of Color Visioning Futures / Palestinian Women Political Prisoners

THIS WEEK on Feminist Magazine with host Lynn Harris BallenFIRST … Don’t you think that Hollywood has produced enough films about the apocalypse? Justice for My Sister Collective (JFMS), a nonprofit that trains young WOC & NB folks in filmmaking with a racial justice and gender equality lens, is hosting it’s second Sci-Fi Screenwriting Lab with a talented group of future TV screenwriters.  Driven by their love for storytelling that has the potential to heal and promote social justice, and inspired by transnational ecofeminism plus writers like Octavia Butler, bell hooks, and more.
We hear from JFMS founder Kimberly Bautista, along with Gabby Jackson, a BIPOC Sci-Fi Lab 2020 graduate turned instructor & coordinator, and RJ Abesamis, a member of the 2021 BIPOC Sci-Fi cohort.
THEN … As part of the #16DaysofActivism Against Gender Based Violence – drawing attention to another pandemic – Margo Okazawa-Rey of KPFA Women’s Magazine focuses on Palestinian women political prisoners. The fact of their existence and the violence inflicted on them is rarely seen in US media.  And we hear part of her conversation with Khalida Jarrar  -released in September after a 2-year incarceration, one of many arrests during her life of activism on behalf of Palestinian people and Palestinian women.
