Mar 10 on FM : #IWD2021 | Making History in Texas | bell hooks

This week the world marked International Women’s Day, and Lynn & Cherise talk about #IWD – how all the media, posts and brands were focused on ‘appreciation’ & ‘girl power’. But we remember the radical roots of the day, and tell you what we wish a celebration of the day would be all about!
On THIS WEEK’S SHOW : Of course the whole month of March is officially Women’s History Month  ( a year-round thing for us). But FemMag was off the air for all of February during Black History Month.  So we’re keeping it intersectional – like we always do – and all month long we’ll be bringing you stories about Black women who’ve made history.
FIRST … Cherise talks to a woman making history – Brianna Brown of the Texas Organizing Project.  If you’ve been following conversations around Texas being the next battleground state, you’ll want to hear about their efforts to help transform Texas into a state where working people of color have the power and representation they deserve.
AND ...almost a year ago Ariana Manov – our Feminist Magazine mentor and former KPFK morning show host – passed away.  Sadly because of the pandemic we couldn’t honor her in person but she was definitely a woman who Made History!  So we bring you one of her favorite interviews …  a rebroadcast of a 2012 vintage interview with visionary feminist theorist and cultural critic, bell hooks.  Is Feminism Still for Everybody?  bell hooks joyously re-defines the “F” word and interweaves the passionate politics of race, gender, class and culture. She describes “Teaching Critical Thinking: Practical Wisdom”, expands the concept of Belonging – speaking to the mind-body-spirit ‘homelessness’ in all of us. And declares that there can be no love without justice.
