FM Jan 12 : New South Justice / Operation Period / Tragedy of Heterosexuality

This week on Feminist Magazine :
with host Lynn Harris Ballen ::

FIRST … In a week of turmoil after the insurgent attack on the Capitol, motivated by election results, we hear about the coalition of black and brown led movements that helped win this election for the Democrats – especially in the south. Lisa Dettmer of KPFA Womens Magazine talks to Ash-Lee Woodard Henderson of the progressive Highlander Research & Education Center in Tennessee. As a member of multiple leadership teams in the Movement for Black Lives (M4BL), Ash-Lee has thrown down on the Vision for Black Lives and the BREATHE Act, and has worked in movements fighting for workers, for reproductive justice, for LGBTQUIA+ folks, for environmental justice, and more.
THEN … Operation Period is a grassroots, youth-run nonprofit dedicated to ending menstrual inequity world wide. Headquartered in Eugene, OR, Operation Period works through the avenues of service, advocacy and education. Cherise Charleswell talks to Manju Bangalore to learn more.
AND … In her new book, The Tragedy of Heterosexuality, Jane Ward smartly explores what’s wrong with heterosexuality in the twenty-first century, and what straight people can do to fix it for good. She shows how straight women have tried to mend a fraught patriarchal system in which intimacy, sexual fulfillment, and mutual respect are expected to coexist alongside enduring forms of inequality, alienation, and violence in straight relationships. And we hear how white supremacy upholds the system and connects to what motivates such a high percentage of white women to support rightwing anti-woman candidates.
