FM June 4: Trust Black Women/ Dyke Pride / Disability Culture

THIS WEEK on Feminist Magazine with co-hosts Lynn Harris Ballen and Kiyana Williams : FIRST … Abortion restrictions disproportionately affect women of color. And in the midst of state by state attacks on reproductive rights, Black women like Georgia state representative Renitta Shannon are leading efforts to beat back anti-choice legislation. She joins us to talk about her filibuster to stand up against #HB481, the bill to outlaw #abortion in Georgia, how she’s part of a group of legislators supporting Black women’s ongoing reproductive justice work, and about trusting Black women.
THEN … June is LGBTQ Pride month, but in the midst of all the rainbow corporate Pride events, grassroots-organized community alternative events are flourishing. Working with community partners and DIY fundraising, these lesbian/queer centred events have a mission that centers inclusivity and encourages activism. We’re joined by Mary Quintero-Wright, an organizer for the DC Dyke March and Sarah Tomchesson, a founder/board member of Dyke Day LA.
AND … In an episode from Making Contact – “Disability: Our Culture Ourselves”— we hear about disability, culture and identity from the perspective of disability communities themselves. Professor Sara Acevedo discusses the powerful ways that common language and terminology can shape our perceptions of disability, and why even today we see further exclusion of disabled people.
All this on Tuesday at 2 on KPFK
