FM April 2: Evangeline / Women Muralists / ‘White Noise’

THIS WEEK on Feminist Magazine with host Lynn Harris Ballen : FIRST … “Evangeline, the Queen of Make-Believe” – a multimedia play with music – reimagines the Los Lobos songbook as a “reverb-drenched 60’s garage band”, and opens April 4th in LA.
Set in 1968, as East Los Angeles exploded in its own civil rights movement,  recent high school grad Evangeline is captivated by the Sunset Strip’s music, and torn between her identity as a devoted daughter by day and a West Hollywood go-go dancer by night. We’re joined in the studio by Nina Diaz – cofounder of indie-punk band Girl in a Coma, who fronts the “Evangeline” band.  She tells us about about the show, how it looks at the struggles Latinas face as they find their own independence from family — showing respect to their roots, yet finding their own voices.  And the show’s educational programming that reaches out to today’s high school students.
THEN … Murals have power to communicate important messages on a larger platform. In Los Angeles, women muralists create work that reflects their lives, lived experiences, and also the diversity of their audiences. The Natural History Museum of LA recently hosted a discussion with muralists Barbara Carrasco, Noni Olabisi, and Kristy Sandoval that explored how women artists shape the cultural production of the city while paving the way for more unique stories, perspectives, and discussions. And we hear all about it from moderator & Chicano/a Studies professor, Denise Sandoval.
AND … Cherise Charleswell talks to Zara Zimbardo,  co-founder of The White Noise Collective. Through writing, workshops, monthly dialogues, and in coalition with other individuals and organizations, their work aims to encourage exploration of what it means to navigate white supremacy, patriarchy, cisnormativity, heteronormativity, and other oppressive ideologies through the experience of both gendered oppression and white or light skin privilege. We hear from Zara about how the collective carries out its important work.

All this on KPFK on Tuesday at 2.
