THIS WEEK on Feminist Magazine with host Kiyana Williams ::
FIRST – Indigenous women in states across the US and Canada are standing up to highlight the issue of Missing and Murdered Indigenous women – abbreviated as the MMIW movement. The statistics are extreme: 4 out of 5 Native women will experience violence in their lifetime and murder is the 3rd leading cause of death among Native women. In South Dakota, MMIW He Sapa is an organization created to help bring awareness for missing and murdered Indigenous women in the Black Hills area. Lynn Harris Ballen and Suzette Zazueta talk to two of the MMIW He Sapa organizers – Nikkole Bostnar and Sunny Red Bear.
THEN – Cherise Charleswell talks with Anja Charbonneau, founder and creative director of Broccoli Magazine, an international magazine for Cannabis lovers – which encourages the discovery and intelligent appreciation of cannabis through explorations of art, culture, and fashion. She discusses their femme-focused aesthetic that allows them to be far more than just another “stoner” publication.
AND – We feature an excerpt from Making Contact’s “I Am Because Am”, which explores the expansion of gender identity and presumed roles in our society, looking beyond the socially constructed ideas of what is male, female, masculine or feminine. What does it mean when individuals challenge specific societal expectations of gender? In the case of intersex individuals, how are these ideas of gender challenged? In the spectrum of “queer identity” how does one embody masculinity, femininity, or neither? And how are communities responding to the potential threat of erasure?
