THIS WEEK on Feminist Magazine with hosts Lynn Harris Ballen & Karina Elias :: Vigilant Love is a healing and arts-driven organization that creates spaces for connection and grassroots movement – to ensure safety and justice for communities impacted by Islamophobia and violence. They recently worked in coalition with other key community organizations to successfully fight back against the LA City Council taking funding for Countering Violent Extremism (CVE) projects – a Department of Homeland Security (DHS) counter-terrorism program that profiles Muslim, Black and Brown youth as inherently suspect and prone to radicalization. We hear from co-chairs Sahar Pirzada & traci ishigo
THEN … Cherise Charleswell talks to Caryn Brandon, Founder and CEO of iTouch Up, a recently launched women-led organization taking a revolutionary approach to reducing recidivism for young people coming out of the prison system. Using a model which combines restorative justice and entrepeneurial training, their work impacts communities throughout Los Angeles County.
AND … Ande Richards talks to Emmy winning actress-turned-director Cady McClain about her new film, “Seeing is Believing: Women Direct“. Women make up only 8% of film directors in the top-grossing 100 films and 25% of television directors in an industry dominated by white men. Cady McClain’s new documentary engages industry professionals in a discussion about women in film, and how they are using their voices to create new opportunities for women and inspire those following in their footsteps.
