THIS WEEK on Feminist Magazine with co-hosts Lynn Harris Ballen & Ande Richards :: FIRST… Grannies Respond/Abuelas Responden is a movement of grandmothers and allies taking action in response to the humanitarian crisis on our southern border. What began as a small group of people who wanted to “go down to the border and just do something” about children being torn from their families and thrown in cages – has become a national movement.
Over six days, beginning July 31, their caravan of vehicles will journey more than 2,000 miles. Kicking off with a rally in NYC and rallies in strategic political districts along the way – to protest the Trump administration’s zero tolerance policy for immigrants and asylum seekers. Ending at a detainment facility in McAllen, Texas for 24 hours of action with ally organizations. We talk to two of the founders – Claire Nelson & Michelle Clifton.
THEN … How will 35 artists, art collectives, and activist groups explore intersectional gender identities under a full moon this Saturday? ‘Ain’t I A Womxn? A Genders Promenade’ is an outdoor participatory event bringing audiences and artists together to stretch gender expressions in new directions. Featuring twenty independent artists – such as Nao Bustamante and Jennifer Moon – and ten art groups – including KCHUNG and Las Fotos – the event will unfold in Los Angeles State Historic Park next to Chinatown with performance art, spoken word, sonic art, media projections and zines. Come to activate – Bring a flashlight! We’ll talk to members of artist collective Snatch Power, and Ann Bray, founder of the presenting art organization, Freewaves.
AND … WriteGirl is a nonprofit organization for teen girls in LA – giving girls and women the space, time and permission to speak up, speak out, write it down and let their unique voices loose. Via the craft of creative writing, volunteer mentors give girls empowerment through self-expression,and valuable communication skills for life. Cherise Charleswell talks to Keren Taylor, Founder and Executive Director.
