THIS WEEK on Feminist Magazine with co-hosts Lynn Harris Ballen & Karina Elias :: FIRST … Next month the LA City Commission on the Status of Women (LACSW) & the Mayor’s office will be co-hosting the 48th Annual Conference of the National Association of Commissions for Women, right here in LA. But what do city commissions for women actually do? How do they advise mayors and city councils, recommend solutions to problems impacting women, and connect to citizen groups doing the work? We’re joined by LA’s commission president Jackie Filla, Commissioner Alice Hom, LACSW Coordinator Caroline Toren, and Leslie Simon from the California Commission on the Status of Women Task Force on Pay Equity – to hear about the work of LACSW and the goals and programming for the upcoming national conference.
THEN … What’s the state of LGBTIQ rights and wellbeing in China right now? And how does the new anti-domestic violence law in China impact the LGBTIQ community? International human rights group OutRight is working with partners on the ground there, and we hear from their Field Program Coordinator Jean Chong and West Coast Director Katie Hultquist about that work, and the solidarity between global and local activist movements.
AND … Award-winning out filmmaker Rolla Selbak‘s new short film CHOKE is premiering at the Outfest LGBT film festival this weekend. Telling the story of a Muslim refugee whose family has escaped the war in Syria, and her success as an MMA champion who hides her identity from her small American town, and the world.
