FM April 17: Changing Sexual Culture / The Power of Science

THIS WEEK on Feminist Magazine
with host Valecia Phillips ::
FIRST … we’ll feature a rebroadcast of an interview by KPFA’s Women’s Magazine: Kate Raphael talks with author, educator and activist Jaclyn Friedman about her new book, Unscrewed, which documents groundbreaking work being done to change the sexual culture. From her website: “Friedman’s work has popularized the “yes means yes” standard of sexual consent that is quickly becoming law on many US campuses. In Unscrewed, she calls on the movement for women’s sexual liberation to move past individualistic “empowerment” messages (for which she coined the term “fauxpowerment”) to focus on collectively transforming the systems and institutions invested in keeping women sexually servile.”
THENKiyana Williams talks with writer, director, producer, and science communicator, Annie Druyan, about her love of the natural world, and her work as the sole creative director of NASA’s Voyager Interstellar Message Project; the golden discs affixed to the Voyager 1 and Voyager 2 spacecraft, which launched in 1977. Annie co-wrote the first season of Cosmos, which originally aired in 1980, hosted by her husband Carl Sagan. Annie is also the creator, writer, and producer of the 2014 sequel of Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey, hosted by Neil deGrasse Tyson.
