Apr 29 on FM: Music & Movies, Bulgarian ‘Supergirls’ & Saffire Sings the Blues

Hosted by Ariana Manov and Lynn Harris Ballen with Jojo Blondal

Performers from SuperDevoiche – the UCLA Bulgarian Women’s Choir – join us to talk about the amazing harmonies and the women’s history in their music. Superdevoiche is a redolence of women’s voices – inspired by the great Bulgarian women’s choirs, and ancient folk traditions of the Balkans. Choir director Tzvetanka Varimezova and singers Julia and Charlotte will share some of that “spice and color” with us.

Academy-award winning filmmaker Debra Chasnoff tells us about Straightlaced – her latest documentary about how popular pressures around gender and sexuality are shaping the lives of American teens.

And keeping up the musical theme…. we’ll hear from Gaye Adegbalola of the group Saffire: The Uppity Blues Women. She’s ‘havin’ the last word’ and will be sharing some of her sweetly raunchy – some say ‘Salacious’ – music.
