Gender, Society and Change: The Past, Present, and Future
at Claremont Graduate University

Keynote Speaker: Beverly Guy-Sheftall
Former President of National Women’s Studies Association
Beverly Guy-Sheftall, Former President of the National Women’s Studies Association and Ann Julia Cooper Professor of Women’s Studies and Founding Director of the Women’s Research and Resource Center at Spelman College will be the opening keynote speaker.
On Friday, scholars will discuss the current state of women in politics, labor, religion, and education. A documentary film on the rise of young women juveniles will be shown followed by a discussion by leaders of community organizations involved with both youth and adult women in the criminal justice system.
The day will conclude with an evening of spoken word, poetry and other creative expressions by students of the Claremont Colleges on issues of gender, society and change.
On Saturday, scholars will discuss the role of men and masculinities across racial and social-class groups followed by a panel of scholars and professionals who will discuss the status of women in leadership in all sectors.
The afternoon sessions will begin with a discussion of gender and student activism followed by the screening of March On! a documentary on the 2009 National Equality Act March in Washington, DC. The conference will end with a discussion of feminism(s) and how it has impacted the changing role of gender in society.
