Hosted by Lynn Harris Ballen & Alicia Fry
It’s time for Feminist Summer Camp! We hear all about it – the only feminist immersion program in the country and an activist bootcamp for college students that includes hands-on adventures in New York, strategies, and social justice organizing skills. With guests Soapbox, Inc. founders Amy Richards and Jennifer Baumgardner – authors of ‘Manifesta: Young Women, Feminism, and the Future,’ & student activist Mitch Hobza.
Then… you may have seen the anti-choice billboard campaign that appeared in Los Angeles recently that declared that “The most dangerous place for a Latin@ is in her/his mother’s womb”? Ena Suseth Valladares, Senior Research Coordinator at California Latinas for Reproductive Justice joins us to discuss their new report: “Unearthing Latina/o Voices,” and the findings that contradict the assumptions behind the billboard messages.
Plus… In 1942, when “computers” were human and women were underestimated, a group of female mathematicians helped win the war and usher in the modern computer age. Sixty years later their story is finally being told. Director LeAnn Erickson discusses her documentary film “Top Secret Rosies: The Female Computers of WWII” – revealing the top secret work female mathematicians did during WWII as the world’s first computer programmers. Hear hear how these women defied social structures that tell women they are too emotional to be rational thinkers, and inspire female students, professors, and everyone committed to increasing representation of women and girls in mathematics and science.
