June 22 on FM: !Women Art Revolution /Boyle Heights Beat / Tejana Author

HOSTED by Celina Alvarez & Christene Kings:   Director Lynn Hershman Leeson joins the show to talk about her new documentary film !Women Art Revolution. Through intimate interviews with women like the Guerilla Girls, art, and rarely seen archival film and video footage, !Women Art Revolution reveals how the Feminist Art Movement fused free speech and politics into an art that radically transformed the art and culture of our times.

Then, we speak with Michele Levander, co-editor and publisher, and student journalist Maria Vera – from the newly released bi-lingual newspaper Boyle Heights Beat/Pulso de Boyle Heights. She will speak to us about how this project has made a difference in the lives of 14 high school students who have banded together to learn about journalism and use it to shine a light on their tight knit community of Boyle Heights. We’ll learn how it got started and where they are headed.

Plus, Tejana author, Barbara Renaud Gonzalez will talk to us about her book “Golondrina, why did you leave me?” a story about a young Mexican woman in a brutal marriage, who makes a heart-wrenching decision to leave her young daughter behind in Mexico as she escapes to El Norte (the U.S.) looking for love. She will also tell us what her journey has been like thus far as a writer. That’s what’s brewing for Feminist Magazine on June 22nd, with your hosts, Celina Alvarez and Christene Kings.
