Join the CSUN Gender & Women’s Studies Department on October 23rd for the 9th
Biennial Phenomenal Woman Awards Ceremony and Fundraiser. This event celebrates
women who have made outstanding contributions to our community.
This year we are excited to honor six inspiring women:
– Val Zavala (Anchor and reporter for KCET’s award-winning news series SoCal
Connected)
– Katherine Spillar (Executive Vice President of Feminist Majority Foundation)
– Andrea Smith (Co-Founder of Incite! Women of Color Against Violence)
– Synthia SAINT JAMES (Visual Artist and designer of the Kwanzaa stamp)
– Lisa Powell (Organizer and Co-Founder, Sistahfest and Camp Courage)
– Roberta Madison (Professor Emeritus, CSUN and Women’s Studies advocate)
The event begins with a Reception and Silent Auction from 4-5 p.m. This is a
wonderful time to meet and converse with the awardees for this year and past
awardees. The Silent Auction offers a wide array of items ranging from spa and
restaurant coupons and weekend getaways to sculptures and other art works. All
proceeds go to supporting the students and faculty in the Gender and Women’s
Studies Department, as well as the CSUN Women’s Research and Resource Center,
the oldest continuing Women’s Center within the California State University
system.
