Hosted by Melissa Chiprin
We will continue a recent dialogue which aired December 23 with filmmaker Amanda Spain. Spain has focused her energies into social issue documentaries. Her latest project was producing the documentary series In Their Boots, this series was dedicated to showing how the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan affect us here at home. We will be discussing Season two’s, “Outside The Wire”, in which three women service members return from Iraq and Afghanistan to find they face a new battle—a battle to treat their wartime injuries.
Also, returning to our airwaves from the December 23 segment is one of the service members in the film, Kayla Williams a former sergeant and Arabic linguist in a Military Intelligence company of the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) and author of “Love My Rifle More Then You: Young and Female In the U.S. Army.” During her deployment to Iraq, Williams was at the forefront of troops’ interaction with Iraqis while also navigating the challenges of being part of the 15% of the Army that is female. Williams elaborates on the growing needs of women veterans: Is the VA ready?
But, first tune in to hear musician Sheila Nicholls talk about her new CD, “Songs From The Bardo”, you can catch her later in the evening at the Hotel Café located at 1623 North Cahuenga Boulevard at 10 PM. Nicholls, songs range from completely acoustic to studio produced but all seem to sit in the strongest belief she holds true, that love is not a cliché but actually the most radical and potent untapped solution, and should be applied now in all directions before we no longer have a choice.
That’s Wednesday, January 13, at 7:00 PM (PST) on Pacifica radio’s, KPFK.
