Hosted by Valecia Phillips : Coming up on Feminist Magazine this week, to celebrate the last day of Women’s Herstory Month, we bring you rare and special treats from the Pacifica Radio Archives that still resonate powerfully today.
We’ll spend the first half of the hour featuring an excerpt from an easy-going 1971 interview by Celestine Ware with Black folk, blues, jazz and spirituals singer Odetta as she discusses what it means to be a woman, her life in America, and her experiences in the music industry, recorded just before the closing of New York’s Fillmore East.
For the second half, we hear from Ntozake Shange, the black feminist poet, author of “for colored girls who have considered suicide, when the rainbow is enuf,” interviewed in 1977 by Clare Spark on The Sour Apple Tree. Shange discusses reactions to her work and re-affirms the importance of telling our stories unapologetically through our own truth.
