FM Jan 31, 2024 : Growing Up in the Ville / Abolition Feminism

THIS WEEK on Feminist Magazine with host Lynn Harris Ballen : FIRST … Across the country – School boards and state legislatures from Tennessee to Idaho are banning teachings about racism in classrooms, and critical race theory (CRT) has become a new buzzword for people unwilling to acknowledge the US’s racist history and how it impacts the present. That’s why books that tell personal stories – for instance about eras of segregation, living under Jim Crow laws, are all the more vital right now. Growing Up in the Ville in St Louis, Missouri is just that kind of book. Five stories about a little black girl growing up in the 40s and 50s in the very segregated St Louis MO. And we hear all about it from author Pauline Estelle Merry.

AND …  Abolition Feminism … ” Prison abolition needs Feminism, it needs anti-racist, anti-capitalist Feminism … ” – Since 2020, the movement to defund the police became a rallying cry to reimagine our approach to public safety. We hear from Angela Y. Davis and other renowned scholars about how we can build a global movement to spark lasting change, dismantle oppressive systems and the shared strategies  an internationalist movement needs to to abolish policing and prisons. Featuring: Angela Y. Davis, Lorgia García Peña, Medhin Paolos, and Leti Volpp. Moderated by Makani Themba.
