FM Sept 2: Not Alone / Self Defense / Fleshing the Spirit

Coming up on Feminist Magazine this week … with hosts Lynn Harris Ballen & Felicia Montes : One in three women in the US will have an abortion in her lifetime. And we keep fighting for abortion as part of reproductive rights and justice. But how can we undo the shame surrounding the issue? Activists Beth Merfish & Emily Letts tell us about their website- ‘Not Alone’ – that’s making abortion stories visible, and letting women who have had abortions know they are not alone.
AND … For girls and women to be empowered as leaders, they first have to feel safe in their own skin. Author Ellen Snortland joins us live in studio to talk about how learning self defense is an empowering skill – especially for women and others targeted for abuse and assault.  And we hear about her new book “The Safety Godmothers: The ABCs of Awareness, Boundaries and Confidence – all about self defense for teens.
PLUS … joining us are Professors and contributors to the new book “Fleshing the Spirit: Spirituality and Activism in Chicana, Latina, and Indigenous Women’s Lives” Irene Lara, Lara Medina and Maria Figueroa. We hear about this first anthology that theorizes the interconnection between Chicana, Latina, and Indigenous women’s identity, spirituality, and social activism. They’ll share more about their experience and their essays which incorporate different genres of writing— poetry, testimonials, critical essays, and historical analysis—and stimulate the reader to engage spirituality in a critical, personal, and creative way.

All this on Feminist Magazine on Tuesday at 3pm. THIS is What Feminism Sounds Like!
