FM Feb 16, 2023: Happy Birthday Audre Lorde / An Abolitionist Story

THIS WEEK on Feminist Magazine with host Lynn Harris Ballen : FIRST … We celebrate Audre Lorde’s birthday this week with an archive recording of the extraordinary black feminist and lesbian writer, poet and activist. This rare recording, from 1980 in New York City, includes an early reading from Lorde’s book ‘The Cancer Journals’ as well as selected poetry, laced together with Lorde’s perspective on racism, sexism, and the general lack of humanity in the world.
AND … Hear from Samora Abayomi Pinderhughes about The Healing Project at Yerba Buena Center for the Arts. The Healing Project, fundamentally an abolitionist project, explores the structures of systemic racism — particularly the prison industrial complex — in the US.
Pinderhughes uses music, visual arts, film, and language as abolitionist action. Preserving intergenerational voices of individuals across the country, including folks incarcerated in prisons and detention centers. Their stories are the foundation for The Healing Project’s vision for societal transformation.
