FM Feb 1, 2023: Campus Sexual Harrassment / Abolition Needs Feminism

THIS WEEK on Feminist Magazine with host Lynn Harris Ballen :: Last week Harvard students staged a walkout of their first class of the spring semester. The action was in solidarity with grad students who had filed a lawsuit against the university – alleging that Harvard ignored Sexual Harassment complaints against Prof. John Comaroff, a tenured anthropology professor, for years. Lexi McMenamin – who writes about News & Politics for Teen Vogue and has been covering the story – joins us to talk about how this shines a light on academic power & structural issues, Title IX and free speech everywhere.

AND … Angela Y. Davis talks Abolition Feminism … ” Prison abolition needs Feminism, it needs anti-racist, anti-capitalist Feminism … ” –
With more police brutality cases, showing how clearly reform methods are failing, we go back to the defund the police movement to reimagine our approach to public safety. We hear from Angela Y. Davis and other renowned scholars about how to build a global movement to spark lasting change, dismantle oppressive systems and the shared strategies an internationalist movement needs to to abolish policing and prisons.
Featuring: Angela Y. Davis, Lorgia García Peña, Medhin Paolos, and Leti Volpp. Moderated by Makani Themba.
