FM Jan 18, 2023: Unsung Civil Rights (S)heroes: Ella Baker & Fanny Lou Hamer

THIS WEEK on Feminist Magazine with host Lynn Harris Ballen – in the week of Martin Luther King Jr’s birthday, we look at some of the unsung Heroines of the civil rights struggle and how we walk in their footsteps.
FIRST … the documentary FANNIE LOU HAMER’S AMERICA could not be more timely and relevant for new generations. A new and original documentary film told through the public speeches, personal interviews, and powerful songs of the fearless Mississippi sharecropper-turned-civil-rights-activist. Today we’re talking to two of the women who brought this story to life, filmmaker Joy Davenport and producer (and Fannie’s niece) Monica Land.
ANDElla Baker is one of the unsung heroes of the Civil Rights Movement, though she was a brilliant grassroots organizer who played central roles in some of the movement’s most famous and most celebrated organizations. We talk to Nifa Akowsooa, Senior Organizer and Advocate at the Ella Baker Center for Human Rights. She works to shift resources away from prisons and punishment and towards opportunities that make Black & Brown communities safe, healthy, and strong.
