FM July 13, 2022: The Janes on HBO / After Roe, the ReproJustice Response

THIS WEEK on Feminist Magazine with host Lynn Harris Ballen ::  Many are still in shock after the Supreme Court overturned Roe v Wade. But folks working in reproductive justice and doing activism for accessible abortion care were not surprised.

FIRST … A timely new documentary “The Janes” premiered on HBO in June and spotlights the Chicago-based underground abortion network called The Jane Collective. Writer, editor and cultural critic Marcie Bianco joins us to tell us about her take on the film, the historic context, and more about how “The Janes” offers a template for organized feminist action with an ethos of care.

AND …   Margo Okazawa-Rey of KPFA’s Women’s Magazine discusses the impact of the overturning of Roe v Wade, including the history the movements that made the law possible, the specific implications of the SCOTUS decision for Women of Color and rape and incest survivors, and how to take action.  Her guests are Monica Simpson, a queer Black activist and executive director of SisterSong Women of Color Reproductive Justice Collective, and Jenny Johnson-Riley, an activist and researcher in the anti-rape and survivor movements.
