FM April 12, 2022 :: Reproductive Freedom Week / California Indigenous resistance & Climate Change

This week on Feminist Magazine, with host Lynn Harris Ballen:
April is Black Maternal Health month & Earth month!
FIRST … It’s Reproductive Freedom Week in California.  This week of action gives people in all regions of the state the chance to learn about cutting edge policy issues in the reproductive movement, and experience advocacy firsthand. The California Coalition for Reproductive Freedom (CCRF) is a statewide alliance of nearly 50 organizations working to promote sexual and reproductive health, rights and justice.  We talk to director Nakia Woods, and operations manager Angeline Wong about the collaborative work of the organizations in their coalition, what it looks like to advocate for policy and tell our stories, how California is being affected by repro rights battles in other states, and the five vital bills that they’re lobbying for this week.

AND … A story not being told enough is Indigenous resistance against extractivism and the forces behind climate change. Making Contact looks at an underreported story in California about the Amah Mutsun Ohlone’s fight to save their most sacred site — a place called Juristac. Contributors Robert Raymond and Della Duncan explore the horrific injustices wrought upon California Indians since the time of the Spanish Missions up to the present and focus on how the Amah Mutsun are working to regenerate their culture, language, and land.
Featuring: Valentin Lopez, Chairman of the Amah Mutsun Tribal Band and Eleanor Castro, Amah Mutsun Elder.
