FM Jan 12, 2022: Catholics for Choice / Migrant Children Detained

THIS WEEK on Feminist Magazine with host Lynn Harris Ballen ::
FIRST …
The 49th anniversary of Roe v. Wade is coming up this month – but the US Supreme court seems on the verge of gutting even that most basic of abortion rights. Meanwhile activist groups for #ReproductiveJustice are working proactively, and reminding us how abortion rights is part of a much larger picture about power, politics and social justice. And one of those groups is Catholics for Choice. We hear from president Jamie Manson about their upcoming projects, as one of the few faith-based pro-choice groups, and a voice for Catholics who believe that their tradition supports the right to follow their conscience about sexuality and reproductive health.

AND … Margo Okazawa-Rey talks about the 2021 wave of incarceration of migrant children in California detention centers, a horrifying direction for our state. How did the US reach this point of detaining thousands of migrant children? As guest Gaby Hernandez says, “People say we have a broken immigration system. We don’t. We have a system that works in the way it was designed to work.” Guests include Gaby Hernandez – ED for the Long Beach Immigrant Rights Coalition, Maricela Gutierrez – Executive Director of SIREN, and Rev. Deborah Lee – ED of the Interfaith Movement for Human Integrity.
