FM Oct 13: Indigenous Peoples Day / Joy Harjo / Missing & Murdered Justice

THIS WEEK on Feminist Magazine with host Lynn Harris Ballen :: This week began with Indigenous People’s Day… (and let’s not forget that Monday was also National Coming Out Day for folks in the LGBTQ communities.) But, on this show we’re bringing you Indigenous Feminist stories and guests, and telling you some behind the scenes stories about our radio show & podcast.
We want you to know more about Feminist Magazine – who we are and how we do it. And why you’ll want to support Feminist radio on the air on KPFK every week!
FIRST … Internationally renowned performer and writer Joy Harjo is an indigenous rights activist and currently Poet Laureate of the United States.
In a Feminist Magazine replay – veteran host Ariana Manov talked to about her work as a poet, musician, performer and visionary from the Muskogee-Creek nations. And through her memoir “Crazy Brave” we witness a woman’s coming-of-age on the verge of the sexual revolution, and the making of an activist-poet fiercely committed to indigenous rights.
AND … from Making Contact Radio – ‘The Many Faces of Justice: Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls of North America’
As reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) still awaits a vote in the U.S. Senate, missing and murdered indigenous women and girls continue to face an unequal system of justice. We hear from indigenous women scholars and activists on what justice means for MMIWG2. With Sara Sinclair, Editor of “How We Go Home”, Gladys Radek Co-Founder of Walk4Justice, Dr. Vicki Chartrand, Paula Julian and Annita Lucchesi.
