FM Sept 25 : Lambda LitFest/ Firefighting Art / Campus Rape at HBCUs

This week on FemMagRadio with co-hosts Lynn Harris Ballen & Ande Richards ::
FIRST … we talk to authors Jewelle Gomez and CB Lee about the upcoming Lambda LitFest LA. This LGBTQ festival for writers and readers launches Saturday, September 29th at the Japanese American Cultural & Community Center in downtown LA – with a full day of programming, featuring panels, talks, readings, and low-cost workshops. We’ll hear about the panels and workshops they’re presenting, and why Queer Literature matters.
THEN …  In this year of one of the worst forest fire seasons in California, community based artist Kim Abeles created ‘Valises for Camp Ground’ – an exhibit of work at the Armory Center for the Arts about fire fighting and the environment. We’ll hear how she created the work in collaboration with female inmates of Camp 13—a correctional facility in the Santa Monica Mountains for women trained and deployed to fight wildfires.  And how the pieces – ten small, mixed media travel suitcases – will later be used as educational tools to teach the public about fire prevention, national forests, and our relationship to nature.
PLUS …  Students at several prominent historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs), have demanded that school administrators address campus sexual assault more vigorously. Last year, student protests at Morehouse College, Spelman College, Hampton University, and Howard University focused on inadequacies in the way sexual assault and rape cases are handled. Two current students and two alums join a roundtable discussion from Making Contact to explore the issue.
