FM Sept 11: Grrrl Justice/ Women Who Submit/ The Artivist

This week with co-hosts Lynn Harris Ballen & Karina Elias :: At this critical moment in criminal/juvenile justice reform, how are girls and queer youth of color being left out of the public conversation – when they have fastest rising rates of incarceration? Grrrl Justice is a short narrative film that tells three vivid stories – exploring pathways into the juvenile justice system through gender and sexuality – and the impact that story and art can have in healing. We talk to writer/director Shontina Vernon, and hear about plans for a Grrrl Justice Community Engagement Series and educational toolkit – with plans to get the film seen in communities where incidents of incarcerated girls and queer youth of color are highest.

AND … What does a submission party look like for woman writers who want equal space in top tier publications? Women Who Submit empowers women writers – by creating physical and virtual spaces for sharing information and encouraging submissions to literary journals. Originally inspired by the VIDA count – which documents the unequal proportion of women/non binary writers published and reviewed in influential publications – WWS offers support to clarify the submission and publication process for women, women-identifying and non-binary writers of all kinds. We’re joined by co-founder Xochitl-Julisa Bermejo to hear about how it all works, and their 5th Annual WWS Submission Blitz … coming up on Sept 15th.

PLUS … Cherise Charleswell talks to “The Artivist” Ms. Janet E. Dandridge – a multimedia artist, feminist and activist. Janet volunteers as a Creative Consultant for human rights organizations and promotes open-source economics with art + technology projects such as FLUIDITY.  Janet joins us to discuss her work as an artivist, and how she uses performance art, installation, photography, and technology to examine individual and collective trauma & resilience in a world of normalized racism, misogyny and otherness.
