FM April 7: Girls make Media & Ecofeminism /Women Writing the Feminine Heroic

THIS WEEK on Feminist Magazine, with hosts Lynn Harris Ballen & Teka Lark Fleming : What happens when you put cameras and media skills into the hands of a group of college and high school girls? You get a collaborative short film that starts with an International Women’s Day rally and takes on the intersections between feminism, globalization, and sustainability.
We’re joined by Santa Monica College professor Melanie Klein, Kaya Foster of environmental education organization Sustainable Works, and SMC student Zury Chavez… telling us about the the process of this project. And how they worked with GlobalGirl Media, teaching SMC students media literacy and technical filmmaking skills, and putting this whole thing together. The film will be screened for the first time at the 2nd Annual SMC Global Ecofeminism Conference on May 3rd, with the student filmmakers.  Along with speakers from AF3IRM & Mujeres de Maiz talking about how the issues addressed at the rally interconnect with sustainability and with grassroots feminist work happening in LA right now.
… THEN, we always hear about the Hero’s Journey in books, films and writing projects. But what about the Feminine Heroic? Teachers Dara Marks and Deb Norton are bringing a one day workshop to LA this month, teaching epic mythologies and their archetypal relevance.  They’ll tell us about how this workshop helps women writers and artists gain greater access to an inner & deeper heroic vision.  And we’ll also hear about Hedgebrook, the global writing community sponsoring this workshop. Hedgebrook is all about who gets to tell our stories, and their residencies and programs support visionary and diverse women writers … advocating for equality for women’s voices, and the stories that shape our culture now and for generations to come.
… AND, we’ll be taking your calls to join us as Sustainer Members for Feminist Magazine on KPFK radio 90.7 FM!  These are tough times for alternative media & listener sponsored radio.  Just $20 a month will make a huge difference, and will help keep Feminist Magazine radio on your radio, or podcast.  ARE YOU IN?   If you want intersectional feminist programming that covers issues, arts, international and local,  CALL 818.985.5735 to sign yourself up as a Sustainer Member – at $10 or even $20 a month.  Tuesday at 3 on Feminist Magazine, THIS is what Feminism Sounds Like!
