July 16 on FM: Prison Sterilizations, The Pill, & Alice Walker

Hosted by Lynn Harris Ballen, Ariana Manov & Danielle Roderick  :

An investigative report just broke the story that at least 150 women were illegally sterilized in two California prisons between 2006 and 2010. We’ll be interviewing Cynthia Chandler the founder of Justice Now the organization that pushed for the investigation – and prison activist Kimberly Jeffrey.  We’ll hear their inside take on the fight to get heard, the impact on the women affected and the investigation now underway.

Since its release in 1960, the birth control pill has been lauded as one of the greatest inventions of the 20th century: a miracle drug synonymous with women’s liberation. “Sweetening the Pill” is a documentary that follows four women who, after suffering harmful side effects from the birth control pill, go against conventional wisdom to discover pioneering alternatives to the pharmaceutical approach.   Danielle Roderick talks to the filmmakers – Holly Grigg-Spall & Helen Kearns.

And the film “Alice Walker: Beauty In Truth” is premiering in LA at Outfest this week. The compelling story of author, poet and a human rights activist Alice Walker is directed by award winning filmmaker Pratibha Parmar, and she joins us live in studio to talk about her experience working with Alice to make the film.

On Tuesday at 3pm on Feminist Magazine : This is what Feminism Sounds Like!
