May 18 on FM: It’s a Feminist Foodie Giveaway!

Hosted by Lynn Harris Ballen, Ariana Manov and Christene Kings

It’s a feast for the mind, heart and ear! From farms to community gardens to restaurants, women are taking food back into our own hands in revolutionary new ways!

Join us for our Feminist Foodie special program… with Ms. Magazine writer Jennifer Cognard-Black on “The Feminist Food Revolution”. And Temra Costa, editor of the anthology Farmer Jane: Women Changing The Way We Eat.

Women’s grassroots and public policy groups have been shaking up the US food economy around nutrition and agricultural worker rights, creating sustainable and locavore movements and challenging gender roles… from the fields to the chefs’ kitchen.
We take a look at women working for sustainable food – like the women profiled in ‘Farmer Jane’, and First lady Michelle Obama- just some of the feminist foodies making a difference.

AND Feminist Foodie giveaways you won’t want to miss! Like our Thank You Gifts that we’ve put together just for you. Tune in on Wednesday at 7pm to get your choice of thank you gifts including the recently released DVD Nourish: Food & Community – the movie that connects us to what a difference our food choices make. And … the intriguing read Farmer Jane – “a call to action” with profiles of thirty women changing the way we eat. Plus… tickets to the fabulous upcoming LA Street Food Fest Summer Tasting!

It’s all on Feminist Magazine this Wednesday May 18! Please — Support our Fund Drive. Be counted as a FemMag fan AND get these awesome Thank You gifts. Help us to keep feminist media thriving & give So Cal feminists a voice on the air!

For just $10 a month – isn’t that amazing? – you can make a difference to support independent radio and feminist voices on KPFK. If you can’t come up with that, know that any amount you can pledge makes a huge difference to us. Listen in on Wednesday from 7-8pm, and call us at (818) 985-5735 to make your pledge.

  1. Frida says:

Good on you for doing women and food, but why aren’t you talking to the women of the South Central Farm? They’re still farming, bringing food to farmers’ markets and the community, and teaching cooking. They put L.A. on the the food map. You can’t really talk about women and food and Los Angeles without the Farmers.

  2. Frida says:

And yes, they have a CSA program for their organic goodies. Now, are you going to talk about Homegirls Cafe and their edible wall?

  3. admin says:

Hi Frida – thanks for your comments! Yes, one of our guests did talk about South Central Farm, and we had hoped to get HomeGirl cafe on the show but got no response to our emails/calls. (They’ve both been guests on FemMag before.) It’s a great idea to do follow up interviews with these guests talking about what’s happening locally. And we also want to do a follow up interview with Lideres de Campesinas (who were featured in Farmer Jane book) to hear more about their organizing with farm working women. Thanks for listening & keep sending feedback, we love it!
