In a free event, families from the greater Los Angeles area will come together to observe Children’s Day and celebrate childhood through musical performances, poetry and spoken word, dancing, story telling, skits and puppet shows, games, art, activities, face painting, workshops, vendors, free vegan food, and more!

The festival, Celebrating Children of the Earth / Celebrando Las Niñas de La Tierra, will take place from 12 P.M. to 4 P.M. May 3 at Long Beach Organic’s Wild Oats Community Garden (10th Street and Grand Avenue) in Long Beach,California. The afternoon event is free and open to the public.

“Our goal is to create a communal space for families to gather, to provide children with artistic and cultural programming that seeks to inspire and nurture their creativity, and to teach and raise consciousness on hard to address issues relevant to our communities like racism, sexism, immigration, the economy, police brutality, and war.”

– Andres Ruiz, one of the organizers for Celebrating Children of the Earth / Celebrando Las Niñas de La Tierra, and father of a ten month old baby boy.

Throughout the world, Children’s Day is an event celebrated on various days annually to promote mutual exchange and understanding among children and to initiate action to benefit and promote the welfare of the world’s children. It is observed on April 30 in Mexico, and since southern California borders Mexico and there is a large population of people of Mexican descent, there was an organic inclination to celebrate Children’s Day near April 30.

This public event is the first annual, and was organized by a collective of families feeling a void of alternative child-oriented community spaces in Los Angeles to gather. Confirmed performances include Southeast Asian youth lion dancers, music by The Fighting Cocks, Pachamama, Marlon D, Barikuda, Macehual, Avi, Nameless, miwaLyric, and Luv the Mezenger, a skit by artist collective One Imagination, and poetry by Los Poets del Norte, Irene Soriano, and Stevie Merino. Vendors include visual artist AUDIBLE SOUL. Food will be provided by Food Not Bombs Guerrilla Chapter.
